When I first decided that I wanted to do this project I was so excited to tell the world how thankful I was for all those who have impacted my life in a positive way. As soon as I got ready to hit the publish button a friend challenged my understanding of the nature of publicizing gratitude. In short, he questioned whether or not my intent to publish a thank you for all the awesome things people have done for me was more than cloaked bragging and self-promotion. I am particularly sensitive to maintaining balance of my ego, so this philosophical conversation about public displays of gratitude caused me to explore my own intentions more deeply, and ultimately pushed me to redesign this effort. The purpose of this project, for me, was to express appreciation for particular moments in my life that have added meaning to my existence.
Alas, I’ve reasoned that my heart just wants to celebrate those amazing beings around me, doing thoughtful, kind-hearted and purposeful work in our communities, loving those around them, and contributing to the overall betterment of society. Humanity won this debate; and with that, I post my first of 1000.
